Slow start to salmon season

EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM) – Local fishermen have been out every day since the recreational salmon season started on June 6. But, they aren’t catching many salmon yet.

The ocean salmon season takes place in the Klamath Management Zone, which is the area between the Oregon – California state line and Horse Mountain.

According to local fisherman, the waters seem to be emptier than past years.

Not many fish are biting, and those that are seem to be halibut or rock bottom fish.

Despite a slow start, fisherman say there are a few good signs to a better season in the coming weeks.

Local commercial fisherman will have to travel south of Horse Mountain, but cannot fish for salmon until August 1.
