EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM) — The City of Eureka is launching a pedestrian crossing improvement project this year. It’s all thanks to a $1.2 grant from Caltrans awarded back in 2018.

There were 35 locations chosen across the city based on collision history, pedestrian use, and other factors. According to the Eureka Police Department, there were 39 vehicle versus pedestrian crashes in the last year.

“Locations had a pedestrian collision over the years or there’s a location that has high pedestrian usage or bicycle usage,” according to Scott Ellsmore, transportation project manager for the City of Eureka.

A majority of improvements will be focused in the Henderson Center area and will include crosswalk improvements like bulb outs, curb ramps, cross walk striping, and pedestrian activated crossing signs.

“It also has new sidewalk infill, as well as led flashing stop signs, and radar feedback signs as well,” Ellsmore adds.

The grant isn’t very flexible, meaning the locations that have already been chosen cannot be changed. Another caveat, the grant does not cover paving roads in the city. Public works director Brian Gerving told the city council last week that an increase in paving work is expected in the near future thanks to Measure H.

“We’ve done multiple projects of this type over the years, but this is by far the largest. It’s important for us to try to improve our pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure as much as we can and projects like this allow us to do that throughout the city,” Ellsmore says.

According to Ellsmore, construction is expected to start within the next month or so.
