WAUTEC, Ca. (KIEM) – For the first time in its history, the Yurok Tribe now has its own high-speed internet service.

Installation was finished yesterday on a new, 150 foot tower in Wautec.  The Yurok Connect Project is now providing internet access for dozens of families and several tribal elders in the area.

Upgrading the project continues. In a few more months, nearly the whole reservation will have internet access

Officials say the broadband service will help with education, health care, and economic development.

The project began back in 2013, and has funding coming from the Federal Cares Act for Coronavirus Relief.
