EPD honors Autism Awareness Month

EUREKA, CA (KIEM) – The Eureka Police Department is honoring Autism Awareness Month by wearing custom patches on their uniforms.

With the various symbols used for Autism Awareness, the Eureka Police Department has picked the multi-color puzzle piece which is the most recognizable symbol.

According to Autism Speaks, Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder, refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication.

According to EPD, the department has taken steps to ensure all officers receive internal and external training in regards to interacting with people with Autism.
