Humboldt’s Annual Gem, Mineral, and Fossil Show is Back with their 67th Event

EUREKA, calif. (KIEM) – The Humboldt Gem and Mineral Society kicked off their 67th Annual Gem, Mineral, and Fossil Show today with kids day. Geode cutting, ancient fossils, and handmade jewelry can be found at the visually stimulating show.

“If you go around and see the show, you’ll see the variety of minerals and specimens… its mother nature’s finest,” said Mike Martin, the Vice President of Humboldt Gem and Mineral Society.

Kid’s day was especially fun. Kids from across the district came with groups or on field trips to enjoy and learn from the show. Martin explained to us that the show is a very educational experience. Some schools even send students off with question sheets to find the answers to.

A very popular section on the back is the geode-cutting booth. There we met with a geode cutter and member of the Humboldt Gem and Mineral Society, Scott Davison.

“What happens at our booth is we have geodes and thunder eggs that are from all over the world,” said Davison. “They buy them over there and we cut them…. And then before we open them up, we put them in the bucket to rinse them off and reveal them to the purchaser, their eyes first.”

A beautiful crystal interior is seen for the first time by the buyer.

“It’s the happiest booth here. There’s no question about it. Nobody has as much fun as we do back here at the geode booth,” said Davison.

The show will continue through the weekend at the Redwood Acres Fairground.
