Eureka, CA–It’s an exciting new exhibit at the zoo that Humboldt locals have been waiting for but, before the bears arrive; the people are invited!  The Sequoia Park Zoo and Foundation are hosting a once in a lifetime–sneak peek fundraiser–for a limited number of guests this Saturday!

“We’re calling it Behind the Scenes: Bear Habitat, which is exactly what it is,” David Reed, the Executive Director of the Sequoia Zoo Foundation said. “For people who want to see the inside of the habitat, who want to walk and talk with the experts and zookeepers and educators and people who help build this habitat.”

Delicious black-bear themed treats will also be served for guests to enjoy.

“You have a delicious menu prepared by Eco’s Cafe here on grounds at Sequoia Park Zoo,” Ashley Osia, the Director of Community Engagement said. “They’re going to be making a bear themed menu with things such as salmon, sardines, an optional cricket, and all kinds of cool things that bears might actually eat in the wild, but yet they’re presented in a gourmet fashion.”

It was a team effort by the Sequoia Park Zoo, the foundation and many partners such as the City of Eureka, the Bear River Band of Rohnerville Rancheria, local contractors, and other organizations to help create this habitat!

“A bunch of people coming together to make what really is a world-class zoo habitat happen,” Reed said. “I think that any zoo in the world would be proud to have this.”

As their first fundraiser of the year–the zoo hopes to continue these fun and unique events like they have done in the past.

“Fundraisers that the Sequoia Park Zoo and Foundation  hold here at the zoo go to support the wellbeing of animals, education, improving habitats, or building new ones like this,” Reed said.

With the exhibit nearly complete–the zoo continues to work closely with state and federal wildlife agencies to establish a timeline of when the bears and coyotes can be taken in

“Although this is a sneak preview event for around 200 ticketed guests, and a fundraiser for sequoia park zoo and foundation, we will be inviting the entire community to a grand opening in the near future as we welcome the bears that will call this new habitat home,” Osia said.

Tickets are $100 per person, and space is limited to this event. To purchase tickets, visit, sequoiaparkzoo.net
