Over the past week, protesters have been building and reinforcing several barricades around the Cal Poly Humboldt campus. This is part of the ongoing pro-Palestine protest that began Monday the 22nd. Protesters continue to occupy the space surrounding siemens hall, including the upper quad.

But what is life like behind the barricades?

Alder S., a volunteer at the mutual aid kitchen, set up by protesters as a hub for food and supplies, spoke about the vibes.

“It’s not very different than regular life,” S. said. “It’s safe. a lot of community. We hang out, talk, eat together. it’s a very comfortable space to be in.”

During the day, especially in the morning and early afternoon, the areas behind the barricades are quiet. People mill about, eating, chatting and checking in on each other. Compared to Monday night, when the protest began, campus is somewhat serene. Tents have been pitched, kitchen and medic booths have been set up and chalk art covers the ground. Protesters are unsure of what will happen next.
