Today on National Donuts Day, Happy donuts is partnering with the Salvation Army for its annual fundraiser.

The Salvation Army began their donut tradition in World War 1, when they provided donuts mto soldiers fighting on the front lines in France.

In 1938, the Salvation Army started national Donut Day to help those in need during the Great Depression.

Present day, many establishments across the country including Happy Donuts in Eureka celebrate national donut day by donating to the Salvation Army.

“We support the rescue mission, we support food for people, we support Boys and Girls Club, Big Brother big Sisters, and also a lot of schools and everyone in this community. So not just for the Salvation Army, but the history of National Donut Day is about the Salvation Army. So that’s our first start of how National Donut Day was created. So that’s like when we do 20% of our sales today to the Salvation Army”, says Natalie Lyly, owner of Happy Donuts.

This time of year is important because financial donations to the Salvation Army from Christmas are running low, and families are in need.

“Well, it comes at a time when funds start running low, right. Because Christmas only lasts for so long, you know, and then, this is about the time that we start needing to fill the pantry again. We did actually start to cut back our hours and so in April, we had to close down to three days a week, and we started asking for help from the community so we were able to secure a rather large donation so that we can come back up to five days a week”, says Loretta Dulay, pastor with the Salvation Army.

In addition to 20% off, Happy Donuts is making their one of a kind Strawberry Creme Puff Donuts.
