It’s opening day at the Humboldt County fair, so we decided to take a look at all the food options.

We started at Fat Annes in the turf room by the race track, which is known for their California Style comfort food.

“It’s not necessarily directly tied to the South, soul food to us is like whatever comforts you. so we have mac and cheese, we have our award winning fried chicken, we have po’boys, we have shrimp and grits. We have fried cheese curds, local rubiano cheese curds that are drizzled with honey and basil and chili flakes. And those are definitely our most popular items. Second to the fried chicken, I would say,” says Tevyn Fisher, owner of Fat Annes.

The Chicken Sandwich was fried to perfection, and we could see what the hype was about.
We asked some fairgoers what their favorites were.

“My favorites here are the fry bread particularly. Love it with cinnamon and sugar. It’s really great. And they started shaved ice this year. We’re excited about that,” says Pam Rex.

“Mines from the Thai barbecue. And it’s really good. This is a teriyaki chicken rice bowl. Good lunch,” says her husband, Paul Rex.

Down the Midway we tried Fryburger, and Horchata from Taqueria Martinez.

“This is the only burger place where we deep fry our hamburger patty. our burger is one of a kind. Really, we toast the bun. It comes with mayo, onion, pickles, cheese. It’s your favorite burger. You just don’t know it yet,” says Trevyn Mullins, owner of Fryburger.

And we couldn’t help but try the giant baby bottle lemonade stand, with multiple flavors and claims to be as cold as your ex’s heart.

“Unlimited free refills all day. Or if you have the small or the cup, Those are one free refill. Basically, you are going to spend the money anyway for drinks, but we give you a free unlimited refills,” says Mustafa Dos of Giant Baby Bottles.

So be sure to come hungry.

Power to the fair was out briefly this afternoon August 21st after a power pole was knocked over, but we just spoke to the fair director and power has been restored. That area still has about 40 customers without power that should be restored by nine tonight.
