Crescent City, Ca., (KIEM)- They call themselves the ‘Eighties Ladies.’ They’re twelve Del Norte County women, brought together by a high school reunion. Women like Billie Kaye Gavin-Tygart, the owner of Six Degrees of Celebration. The back of Gavin-Tygart’s party store is being flooded with tool, garnished with gowns, dressed with… well…. dresses.

She’s not shifting the focus of her business from bashes to boutique. Instead the Eighties Ladies are sponsoring a dress drive they hope will make Disney Princess induced day-dreams come true.

Prom is an iconic element of the American adolescent experience. Immortalized as the pinnacle of most coming-of-age flicks, prom night is something a lot of youth look forward to. Life, however, is no John Hughes movie. Gorgeous gowns come with a price tag. Usually.

Gavin-Tygart is gathering dress donations to create a perfect prom experience for young ladies in Crescent City, free of charge. Girls from the North Coast Town can “shop” without spending a dime, bringing new life to often once-used dresses.

The idea to form a Crescent City version of the Fairy Godmother Project occurred to Gavin-Tygart and her girlfriends last Friday. By Monday morning Six Degrees of Celebration became the gathering point for more than 60 gowns. But they’re still collecting.

Until June, you can drop your dresses there. Trading adolescent memories for closet space, and offering a young lady the shot at a Cinderella moment. Some people have also chosen not to donate dresses. Instead they’ve brought gift cards for salons to the store.

“It’s our way to pay it forward.” Gavin-Tygart says. Women supporting women. If you’ve got a gown to give, or are on the hunt for a dress for the big night you can contact her at (707) 464-6600.
