EUREKA, Ca (KIEM) – Sheriff William Honsal addresses the proactive listening by local law enforcement agencies as they work to instill trust from minority communities.

On June 7, Eureka Officers and Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies waited at the Eureka Police Department as protesters marched to the front door. Chief Watson and Sheriff Honsal spoke to the crowd as they acknowledged their concerns.

Sheriff Honsal added, it is his job to listen. He was proud to be able to do so and to offer his own words.

When asked what “Black Lives Matter” means to him, Sheriff Honsal talked about the people in the community that feel hurt. Honsal also talked about the meaning of “Black Lives Matter” in relation to “All Lives Matter.”

As local protests continue, Sheriff Honsal asks that community members remain peaceful while the community comes out of COVID-19 closures.
