Senate passes bill to protect California home rebuilding after wildfires

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KIEM) – The Senate has passed a California law regarding contractor licensing classifications.

Senator Mike McGuire’s SB 1189 bill addresses contracting issues and deceptions as Californians wait for their homes to be rebuilt following the 2017 and 2018 wildfires.

Many residents resorted to contracting deals after their homes burned down, but ran into issues regarding improper installations or an incomplete project.

SB 1189 eliminates the one-size-fits-all contracting license and creates a more transparent process.

It also allows District Attorneys to prosecute unlicensed contractors for taking advantage of wildfire survivors.

The bill is co-authored by Senator Bill Dodd and Assembly Member Evan Low and it will head to the Assembly next.
