They have four legs, fur, and a wet nose, but one thing they don’t have is a forever home. The Humboldt County Animal Shelter in McKinleyville is critically overpopulated. With a decrease of adoptions and an increase of dogs, the facility faces challenges, and the dogs lives may be at risk.

Facility Manager, Andre Hale, tells us that fostering an animal can help prolong a dogs life and reduce the number of euthanizations, as it will free up space. She says they only have so much space.Hale tells us they have an overpopulation of Pitbulls due to the stigma they have. So they are now reducing the cost for the breed.

Hale tells us that volunteers and donations are always welcome. She also emphasizes the importance of spaying and neutering your pets to help reduce overpopulated shelters.
