Pawnee Fire spreads to 13,700 acres, containment up to 30%

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) – The Pawnee Fire in neighboring Lake County continues to steadily grow, alongside containment.

Since Tuesday night, the fire has grown by 700 acres, sitting at 13,700 as of Wednesday night.

Firefighters have managed to reach 30%, according to Cal Fire.

A Humboldt County Strike Team is a part of fighting the Pawnee Fire, which has displaced about 3,000 people from their homes due to mandatory evacuations in the Spring Valley area.

While 22 structures have been destroyed, those centered in this struggle remain hopeful.

“Everybody takes care of everybody,” said Jay Michael, a Pawnee Fire evacuee, “There’s water for the dogs, medication. Wow, this is mind-blowing.”

“The winds have been very calm for us today,” said Cal Fire Public Information Officer, David Clark, “Twenty-four hours ago we had really erratic winds and now the winds are playing in our favor.”
