Two recruits begin Humboldt Bay Fire Academy

EUREKA – Help is on the way for Humboldt Bay Fire. Two new recruits began their training academy this week.
Lyndon Powell and Logan Bongio will spend the next six weeks learning the ins and outs of the department.
That includes training in everything from deploying ladders and hoses to extricating people trapped in vehicles.
Friday the pair got comfortable using self-contained breathing apparatus to make entry at a structure fire.
Powell and Bongio may seem familiar. Each has served as a volunteer for the last year and now hope to be hired on full time when they finish the academy. Captain Chris Mitchell said this training will allow them to get right to work.
“It’s a lot of work for them,” Mitchell said. “It’s a lot of work for the guys in our department to put them through it but this is the building foundation for them to be a good Humboldt Bay Firefighter to serve and protect this community so it’s extremely important.”
