Nonprofits come out for Peace Action Day at the Arcata Plaza

Arcata, Ca., (KIEM) The City of Arcata’s Plaza was a hub Saturday for the Farmer’s Market but also for the 5th Annual Celebration of International Day of Peace.

A number of nonprofits organizations, groups and agencies were stationed at the plaza informing, educating and inspiring those to take matters into their own hands about a variety of issues that affect the community.

Debra Dukes, member of 350 Humboldt, an organization that focuses on climate change action, said many are not familiar with the organization that she’s involved in but said it is education that is key.

“We are all for whatever national and international actions that can be done, but we are blooming where we are planted and that happens to be here in Humboldt,” said Dukes. “If we don’t do something about climate change the world we know right now is not going to be in existence for our children and grandchildren. Our culture will be gone.

The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom Humboldt in partnership with the North Coast Growers’ Association hosted Peace Action Day on the Plaza.
