Tips on babies sleeping safely from Department of Health and Human Services

EUREKA – October is National Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Awareness Month, and the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services has advice to make sure your baby sleeps safely.

To reduce the risk for SIDS, experts recommend you place infants on their backs to sleep.

They say to use a firm surface, like a safety-approved crib. Have your baby sleep in your room, but not on your bed. Keep soft objects like pillows and loose bedding away from your baby’s sleeping space. And lastly, do not allow smoking around your baby.

If a parent is having trouble with their baby’s sleeping pattern or the baby isn’t settling, a baby swing can be used to soothe the child. Perhaps parents/guardians should look at the best baby swing 2020 to help calm and soothe a baby if they’re not settling. With a baby swing, parents can move the baby anywhere in the house too so that they can keep an eye on the baby and make sure nothing is obstructing the mouth area.

Also, Child & Adolescent Health Programs, the Safe Sleep Subcommittee, and partnering agencies put together a display at the Bayshore Mall about safe sleep environments for babies.
