Stricter gun control laws starting in 2019

Ca, (KIEM) – Starting next year, California will be adding more restrictions to the state’s current gun control laws. According to the gun violence archive, there have been 54,400 shootings in America in 2018, and more than 500 in California.

Starting January 1st, anyone convicted of a misdemeanor domestic violence offense or has been hospitalized more than once in a year for a mental health diagnosis. Will be prohibited from possessing a firearm for the rest of their lives.

With the exemption for law enforcement officers, members of the military and anyone who possesses a valid unexpired hunting license. People younger than 21 will not be able to purchase a long gun, such as a rifle or shotgun.

One local firearm trainer told Redwood News that Humboldt County already does a great job when giving concealed weapons permits. He says he’s glad for the uniformity, but will dread the upcoming ammo restrictions staring in July.
