City officials oppose placement plan for a sexually violent predator

EUREKA, CA. (KIEM) – Eureka city representatives are coming together to keep a sexually violent predator out of the city. A number of officials have signed and sent a letter to a Humboldt County judge objecting to the placement plan for Joshua Cooley.

Cooley was designated as a sexually violent predator back in 2010. Officials believe Cooley is “most likely to re-offend” basing that decision off his criminal past and behavior. He’ll no longer be allowed internet access, even to get to legal sites like Nu Bay, as well as many other terms he’ll have to adhere to.

As of now, the proposed plan is to release cooley as a transient. Meaning Cooley would be moved from one motel to another every 3 to 4 days, with supervision. That’s according to the District Attorney’s Office.

In the letter sent to judge John Feeney, Mayor Susan Seaman, Chief of Police Steve Watson, City Council members, and other officials have all expressed their concerns on the proposed placement plan.

They are now encouraging the public to attend the next court hearing. It is scheduled for Friday, May 3rd at the Humboldt County Courthouse.

Community members can also write letters expressing their thoughts to Judge John Feeney or you can email a statement to the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office.
