EUREKA, CA (KIEM) – Flags are raised at the Ocean View Cemetery to remember those who served our country. We bring you more on this somber ceremony.

Hearing Amazing Grace from Bagpipes, may bring a thought or two to your mind. For one Coast Guard and Navy Vet, it brings up emotional memories. The song was played at his mother and father’s funerals.

“He served as a fireman, and she served making planes. So, they were both doing something on the Homefront, but they didn’t get any of the recognition,” said Brutus Ward, a Coast Guard and Navy Veteran.

After Brutus Ward was done serving our country, he didn’t know one of his childhood friends passed during the line of duty.

“I was a guard at the Vietnam Wall when it visited San Leandro California. One of the guards manned the books, and that way I knew that a friend of mine had passed during Vietnam that I had gone to Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade with,” said Ward.

One Vietnam Veteran thinks it is important to acknowledge the losses of our service men and women.

“If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t have the freedoms we have today,” said Jack Moore, a Vietnam Veteran.

Jack Moore recalls someone who died during his years of service.

“I know we lost a young man. A pilot was shot down. A junior officer I had just met. I thought the world of him. His name is escaping me right now, but I did find his name on the wall in Washington D.C., And that’s very very emotional to see, connect with someone that you actually knew,” said Moore.

Over 200 flags were placed along the Ocean View Cemetery to never forget deceased veterans.
