TRINIDAD, CA (KIEM) – The California Coastal Commission has released its staff report regarding the Trinidad Rancheria’s proposed 5-story hotel. They are again recommending for the Rancheria to downsize the project. Leon Purvis breaks down the details.

After months of working with the Coastal Commission, the Trinidad Rancheria has satisfied only three of its five concerns. They are wastewater, hazards, and traffic.  The visual size of the hotel on the coast is still an issue. The Rancheria thinks otherwise.

“We’re going to make our case at the Coastal Commission level that, the visual aspect of this has been addressed, and has been mitigated,” said David Tyson, Interim CEO for Rancheria Economic Development Corporation.

The Rancheria released images of what the hotel would look like. But not everyone is okay with the 5-story building looking out on the coast.

“We’re concerned about the impact of or the visual impact here on this shore. Of something that is 69 feet tall,” said Ted Pease a member of HARP.

Another concern is if Trinidad can supply the Rancheria with enough water. The City recently did a water test. The results showed they can produce an additional 48,000 gallons daily. The Rancheria sees that as good news.

“We’re not going to be using anywhere near that number. So we feel that demonstrates that they have the capacity to serve as far as quantity of water,” said Tyson.

Ted Pease is a member of the Humboldt Alliance for Responsible Planning. He doesn’t think The City can provide the 48,000 gallons daily for the Rancheria.

“I’m worry about the taps going dry. And I think that’s generally a concern. My understanding is that the studies that they’ve done so far have not come up with a definitive answer to that question,” said Pease.

The Coastal Commission will have a hearing on the matter June 12th in San Diego. That’s when they will state their case.
