HAF Finalizes Agreement with Wiyot Tribe for Gathering Rights

Humboldt County (KIEM)– The Humboldt Area Foundation and the Wiyot Tribe have finalized a memorandum of understanding, allowing the tribe to gather from the 14.5 acres on Bayside.

The agreement was approved back in February by the H.A.F Board of Directors. Under the agreement, the tribe will provide consultation and advice on traditional land management practices of Bayside property. The property falls within historic boundaries of Wiyot land.

It allows gathering rights for members to harvest hazel and other culturally significant plants. Landowners who would like to participate are encouraged to call tribal offices.
