HOOPA (KIEM)- The Hoopa Valley Tribe had a changing of the guard Friday, swearing in newly elected Tribal Chairman, Byron Nelson Jr. He will be taking over for Ryan Jackson who served in the position since 2015.

There are a lot of changes Nelson wants to see and hopes that it will start happening soon.

One major issue that he wants to tackle is the drug epidemic. Nelson is not a fan of the valley opening up to cannabis cultivation and wants to enforce random drug testing to help combat the ongoing problems within the tribal community. He also will be reaching out to other tribes to help bring in new ideas and allow for new change.

Along with Nelson, Joe Davis, Baldy-Miller, Oscar Billings, and a couple other members have been added to the council.
