Board of Supervisors Approves Purchase of Street Block for Parking Lot

Eureka, Ca. (KIEM) – Tuesday, the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to approve the purchase of the 1000 block of Fourth Street to turn the site into a parking lot. The purchase includes three parcels that the city will pay a little over $900,000 for.

On one side of the block, there is the Public Defender’s Office, which the County already owns. On the other side, there is Raliberto’s Taco Shop. The plan is to demolish the buildings to make room for a parking lot that would have roughly 35 spaces.

The idea of buying up the rest of the block has been in the works for more than three years. According to the staff report, the parking lot would offset the loss of parking expected to result from the planned expansion of the county jail.
