EUREKA, Ca. (KIEM)-Whether it’s food, packages or fuel, truck drivers are essential.

What is also essential is food and amid the Covid-19 outbreak it’s getting more difficult for truck drivers to get a bite to eat on the go.

The “Shelter in Place” order has caused many restaurants to close their dining rooms leaving truck drivers with no way to order and receive a hot meal.

That’s because restaurants have been following state and local guidelines to help prevent the spread of the Coronavirus.

Truck driver Michael Simmons says stopping to get food has become an inconvenience.

“Any delivery person that is out on the road right now,” he said. “If they don’t bring lunch with them it’s becoming a harder issue to find somewhere to go to eat.”

“It is making it nice having some restaurants letting us order in and bringing it to us,” Simmons said.

That is exactly what local McDonald’s franchise owner Jesse Klair is doing.

“We wanted to make sure they were taken care of during this time,” Klair said. “The truckers usually drive up to about 11 hours.”

Truckers are spending hours picking up and dropping off loads, with barely enough time to eat.

That’s why Klair made it a point to offer call-in orders and curbside delivery,

Drive thru service doesn’t accommodate big trucks, and walk-ups are not an option.

This little act of kindness is resonating with truck driver.

“We do really appreciate everybody helping out, like letting us phone in an order and bringing out to us, Simmons said. “It does mean a lot,”

It also means a lot to Klair and fellow restaurateurs.

“I am pretty sure there are other restaurants doing the same for our truck drivers you know,” Klair said. “So let’s make sure we take care of them on a daily basis, not only during this time.”
