Humboldt State student moves tutoring business online due to Covid-19

EUREKA, Ca. (KIEM)-Many college students are out of a job and no longer attending classes physically amid the “shelter-in-place” order.

A Humboldt State student hasn’t let that stop her, she’s helping younger students succeed in school while putting a little money in her pocket.

“The schools changed to online or homeschooling they (parents) weren’t just full-time parents anymore, they were full-time teachers as well,” Jasmyn “Jazzy” Brock said.

Her new normal no longer consists of attending classes physically, Brock’s daily schedule has changed drastically.

“It’s pretty strange having to wear a mask and gloves just to get groceries,” Brock said.

Despite the challenges, the HSU student is staying optimistic.

“Overall I am just trying to take advantage,” she said. “I can sit at home and relax and do what I can to keep Covid-19 from spreading.”

Spreading the virus by being in close contact with others, so Brock moved her tutoring services online.

The move not only encourages social distancing, but also benefits more than just the child.

“Helping tutor these kids eliminates that stress both for the parents and the kids with this new style of learning.”

A new style of learning, most parents in their 30’s and 40’s weren’t taught as kids according to an Arcata parent, Vera Greenwood.

Teaching children at home while school sites are closed has posed a challenge for most parents like Greenwood, who is the parent of a fourth grader.

Tutor’s teach the same style as their kids are currently taught, and her daughter Ali couldn’t be more pleased.

“She can help with any subject, which is very nice,” Ali said. “The way I get to talk to her is on the Zoom app, I send the pictures I need help with, she helps super easily and I really appreciate it.”

“Our children won’t get as frustrated with somebody else as they do when they are with us,” Greenwood said.

It’s taking a little getting used according to Brock but her transition has been seamless.

“HSU and the staff has done a really excellent job in easing that transition for students and making sure they all have the tools available,” she said.

As Brock continues to provide all the tools the kids she tutors need to succeed amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
