Sheriff’s Office encourages neighborhood watch

EUREKA, Ca. (KIEM)-The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging North Coast communities to join a program that brings neighbors together not only to identify and fight crime but to create a sense of community.

Neighborhood watch, according to law officials, is one of the oldest and best known crime prevention concepts in North America.

It’s a way communities can help reduce crime, create a better quality of life and establishes a greater sense of security.

Neighborhood watch meetings have now moved online since the Covid-19 pandemic began.

Despite there being 78 neighborhood watch groups throughout Humboldt County, they are still needed, according to Humboldt county’s public information officer.

Crime hasn’t necessarily gone up, however, as people shelter in place those numbers may change.

She says the neighborhood watch program is about more than just crime, it’s about being neighborly.

Law officials say if you see something, say something, callers can remain anonymous.

The anonymous tip line phone number is (707) 268-2539.
