Humboldt County Sheriff Makes a Statement on George Floyd Protests

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Ca. (KIEM) – Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal makes a statement on the George Floyd protests:

“We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness….” Today I stand with Law Enforcement in support of justice. From everything that I have seen, what has happened in Minnesota with George Floyd was absolutely wrong. Law enforcement can only use force to overcome resistance, prevent escape, or affect the arrest. When a person stops resisting, law enforcement officers have to stop the application of force. Law Enforcement’s job is to protect the rights of citizens and preserving LIFE is our #1 priority. It makes me sick to my stomach to see what has happened. I pray for the family of Mr. Floyd. I am thankful that the former Law Enforcement Officer will be held accountable and will have to answer for his actions in court.

Please do not judge all law enforcement officers based upon the actions of the few involved in this crime. I am thankful that we live in America that has a judicial system that does not provide instant justice. Due process is necessary in a free society. The system is not perfect, but it is the best we have in the world. I pray that leaders can continue the dialogue and advocate for Justice.

There is NO Room for racism or hatred in our world. Black, Brown, Asian or White… hating someone because of the color of their skin is wrong and it cannot be tolerated. I pray for peace in our country and justice to be served. I also ask the community leaders to please be the voice of reason during this highly emotional time. We can be mad, angry, upset, sick and hurt over everything that has happened. For those who are peacefully protesting, I hear you loud and clear. As soon as people commit violence or crimes in response to their anger the focus is taken off of the message and onto their actions.
