New requirements to ride public buses allow for more passengers

EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM)-New requirements to ride public buses will allow for more passengers to board at one time.

“At first we had limits on passenger count, and so we did have to turn some people away,” said Evans.

Seats were roped off to allow for social distancing, that has since changed.

“We have taken away those caution tape,” said Evans. “We still caution the people to practice social distancing.”

“As far as turning people away, we really don’t do that anymore, at all,” he said.

“What we’re asking our passengers to do if certain seats are empty don’t have the sign that says empty please seat hear, to allow for social distancing,” said Humboldt Transit Authority’s General Manger Greg Pratt.

Eureka Transit hours have changed, the new hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.  And Redwood Transit has eliminated four late night runs and two early morning runs.

Pratt says improvements have been made to accommodate more passengers.

“Before it was tough because we didn’t have the mask and we had to keep the six feet, that we are able to use a mask and use proper signage,” he said.

And cleaning procedures that meet county guidelines, as mechanic Cory Fales knows all, too well.

“So when they come back in we clean the bus then sanitize them, then wipe the handrails, where people are touching, with the disinfectant,” Fales said.

And heavily touched areas on the buses.

“It takes a while to clean the buses,” Fales said. “About a half-hour on each bus.”

The approximately $45,000 upgrades is funded through the CARES ACT.

Humboldt Transit Encourages passengers to download their app or purchase passes online, and exit using the back door.

Evans says those who use public transportation need to keep in mind there are additional rules.

“Just wear face coverings, have fare to pay for your ride and be patient with us,” Evans said.

HTA has increased bus service during the week and a modified schedule on Saturdays. There are no Sunday service at this time.
