Amid COVID-19 pandemic, travel by vehicle more problematic than flights

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) – According to Public Health Officer Dr. Teresa Frankovich, residents traveling in and out of the county by vehicle have more of an impact on the county’s case count than tourists visiting by plane do.

Flights to and from Los Angeles International Airport and California Redwood Coast- Humboldt County Airport, are set to resume on Monday.

Despite community concern, Dr. Frankovich says focusing on COVID-19 transmission by plane only is problematic.

She says traveling is going to happen no matter what, but we must deal with it in the safest way possible.

Humboldt County is somewhat isolated from major metropolitan areas, therefore it is somewhat protected from the rapid transmission.

Dr. Frankovich wants to remind residents that the safest thing to do is to stay close to home.

If residents decide to travel during this time, Dr. Frankovich asks that safety precautions such as masking, social distancing and hand washing are still being done.
