City of Eureka teams up with Recology Humboldt County to give away free compost

SAMOA, Calif. (KIEM)- With summer officially here, the City of Eureka and Recology Humboldt County teamed up to give away free compost to community members.

Over thirty cubic area of compost was up for grabs. The city and ecology wanted to help people jump start their summer gardens by giving away free compost.

Lost Foods and Samara Restoration also participated and donated native plants and vegetables seeds.

Some of the seeds people could choose from were watermelon, carrots, bell peppers and corn. In the span of four hours, roughly fifty vehicles came by to grab their share of compost.

By doing this the organization and the city hope to help fight food insecurity and promote a healthy lifestyle by helping people grow their own foods.
