EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM)-Mayor Susan Seaman stresses the importance of keeping Humboldt beautiful in her weekly address.

She says, despite cut backs on marketing, the region is seeing tourists flock to the area.

“Unfortunately, that appreciation of our natural beauty isn’t always matched with the desire to keep things that way. Unauthorized camping has left beaches, parks, roadsides and more covered with litter,” said Mayor Susan Seaman.  “This isn’t a problem exclusively in Humboldt County. People have noticed the trend everywhere from Europe to Hawaii to our National Parks.

“Not being alone isn’t a consolation when we see what a burden it is on local authorities who have additional work cleaning litter when they are already stretched thin.”

For now, according to Eureka’s mayor, active volunteers who care about the community are rolling their sleeves up and doing what is needed to keep the county clean.

The PacOut Green Team is a local group that have taken the initiative to organize clean-up days.

The team is comprised of avid outdoors people who, on their own time, pick-up trash to allow for an enjoyable outdoor experience free of unsightly garbage left behind.

The next clean-up event is scheduled for Saturday on August 22 at Cooper’s Gulch.
