Highway 101 remains closed, mandatory evacuations still in effect due to Oak Fire

WILLITS, Calif. (KIEM) — Firefighters are currently battling the Oak Fire near Willits in Mendocino County. It’s forced mandatory evacuations and completely shut down a major highway. According to Cal Fire, the fire is 863 acres and 5% contained.

Right now, Highway 101 remains closed just north of Willits. The closure is from the north Willits on-ramp to the intersection of Highway 101 and Route 162 at Longvale. Per Caltrans, there is no estimated time for reopening.

Mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for surrounding communities. Evacuation orders are in effect for all of 3rd Gate, all of Brooktrails, all of Spring Creek, Schow Road and Ryan Creek Road, and Sleepy Hollow. Evacuation warnings are in place for Urmulco Road, Sherwood Rancheria, Shimmins Ridge Road, Hurst Willits Road, String Creek, and Willits Valley north of Highway 20.

Per the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office, the fire is growing quickly and evacuation areas may change. The best way to stay up to date is by using MCSO’s evacuation map available on their social media pages and at https://tinyurl.com/MendoEvac.

A number of shelters have been set up in the area. One is at Willits High School and another at Beachtel Grove Middle School. There is also a large animal shelter set up at Willits High School, as well.

2 structures have been destroyed with 800 more threatened. The cause is under investigation.
