EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM)-Food for People is rebuilding after disaster struck in their main food bank facility in Eureka.

Anne Holcomb is the Executive Director for Food for People.

“This Friday we are officially going kick off our campaign to tear this building down and rebuild. This is something that’s been in the works for a few years, actually with a longer range plan,” said Holcomb. “We had started raising some of the funds to make that happen, and then when the sewer disaster happened on February 28, it caused such extensive damage to the building, it really didn’t make sense to invest any more money in reconstructing anything for short term.”

Local and state legislators will join Friday’s kick off to discuss the state of food security in our area.

The virtual event is to update the community on the progress on the food bank facility rebuild.

There will also be on a live sneak-peek to see demolition kick off and celebrate moving forward – keeping in line with a healthier, safer community so all can thrive, according to Holcomb.

People are encouraged to preregister, by clicking here.

The first 50 people to register using the zoom link will receive a food for people face mask!

Holcomb says, the new faculty will accommodate more food.

“We’ll have expanded refrigeration and a lot more better spaces for our staff to work,” she said. “It will be a phased approach, so were focusing on storage initially.”

The new facility will ensure every person in Humboldt County in need can access nutritious foods, and local children, seniors, and families can connect with services that address the root causes of hunger and poverty, according to Food for People
