DEL NORTE COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM)-the Del Norte Counties Sheriff’s Office says, thefts of deliveries are on the rise – and they want the community’s help to catch them the culprits red-handed.

DNSO will plant fake packages on residential porches with deputies nearby – those caught will be arrested and booked in the county jail.

Sheriff Erik Apperson says, would-be thieves should think twice before attempting to steal packages from community member’s front doors or businesses.

“We alerting the public for two reasons, the first is we hope to harden the target, were encouraging people to report any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods and consider anti-theft equipment like cameras,” he said.

Apperson says, he wants the sting to discourage these type thefts.

“Secondly, I’m hoping would-be thieves will hear about our efforts and think twice about when it comes to stealing. I’d much rather prevent criminal behavior as oppose to trying to catch-up with it afterwards,” he said.

To report suspicious activity or those who’d like to loan their porch out to the department can call (707) 464-4191 or leave a message on their Facebook page which can be accessed by clicking here.
