Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office makes changes to thoroughly investigate every case of child abuse or neglect

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) — The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office continues its work to ensure every single case of child abuse or neglect is thoroughly investigated.

The State DOJ was monitoring both the Sheriff’s Office and Child Welfare Services after a complaint by a local tribal member citing cross reporting issues between the 2 agencies and the tribe. Changes had to be made.

A database was created to track and make sure every cross report was properly documented, assigned a case number and deputy, and investigated. A coordinator was also brought on to conduct weekly audits. HCSO also continues to take part in a community task force to identify other areas of improvement.

“All those things, we fulfilled those obligations and we submitted to a 3rd party monitor. They checked our box every quarter saying we fulfilled all of our obligations. So in reality after 3 years, the department of justice didn’t have anything for us to continue to do because we fulfilled all those obligations. They recognized that and dropped us from that settlement agreement,” according to Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal.

With the monitoring period over, Sheriff Honsal says all the focus can now shift to investigating cases.
