New K9 deputy named in honor of local hero

DEL NORTE COUNTY . Calif. (KIEM)-THE DEL NORTE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE’S The Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office’s new K9 deputy needed a new name, they asked the public to help, the community didn’t disappoint.

According to Sheriff Erik Apperson hundreds of names were submitted, including the name Bruno, which was ultimately chosen.

The name has significant meaning, local hero, Army National Guard Captain Bruno De Solenni was killed September 20, 2008 when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle while deployed in Afghanistan.

Sheriff Erik Apperson reached out to the family, and with their blessing named the new K9 deputy in his honor.

Apperson says the department is extremely happy with their decision.

“Actually, a lot of people are excited, Bruno is somebody that is well known in our community and I think that our community is behind the idea, they’ve already showed it,” he said. “Just a tremendous amount of support.”

The person who came up with the name get an exclusive meet-and-greet with  Deputy K9 Captain Bruno.

 “One of our local residents, named Rich Bolen was the first one to come up with the idea,” said Apperson.
