DEL NORTE COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM)-A generous donation worth about $600,000, from the Yurok Tribe will enhance the health and safety of residents in Southern Del Norte County, as well as Northern Humboldt County.

The HME Model 18 Type One Fire Engine, gifted to the Klamath Fire Protection district, is suited for fast, effective response to incidents, such as structure fires, hazardous materials, as well as medical and rescue calls.

Fire Chief Lonnie Levi says resources have been a point of contention, especially with the COVID pandemic and active wildfire season.

“The district operates on such a small budget that we don’t have the avenue to be able to replace equipment let alone purchase something like this,” said Levi.

Funds from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act were used.

Yurok Tribal Chair Joseph L. James says they depend on neighboring fire crews.

“The Klamath Volunteer Fire is a huge asset to the Yurok community,” he said.

According to James, COVID-19 emphasized the need to enhance local emergency response capacity, and because the area is so remote, the fire department is often left to fend for themselves.

“They are the volunteers, that are front line workers, that are first on the scene to assist in an emergency situation,” he said.

“One of the things that we recognize is the importance of being able to outfit and equip our volunteers, so they have the right equipment and provide safety for the community,” he said.

Yurok officials say this was a way for the to support their fellow neighbors which will improve the ability for fire crews to serve the community more effectively.
