22-year-old house guest charged with arson after fire rips through home; deemed total loss, police say

ARCATA, Calif. (KIEM)-A home on the 2700-block of Greenbriar Lane sustained extensive damage after a fire ripped through the structure over the weekend.

At about 9:25 Saturday morning, the Arcata Police Department responded to a residential structure fire.

Officers arrived to, an aggressive man in the yard throwing items on the burning home and at officers.

The man, now identified as Arcata resident Jesse Esteban Banuelos, refused to comply with orders to back away from the flames, to allow fire personnel room to do their job.

Detective Sergeant Chris Ortega with the Arcata Police Department says the man was taken into custody without incident.

“Eventually he did comply, and he was taken into custody, as far a suspicion of arson, it doesn’t mean that we think he didn’t do it, it means that we believe he did commit arson and it’s under investigation and still has to go through the justice system,” he said. “If anyone witnessed the events please feel free to contact the police department it’s still an ongoing investigation.”

According to Ortega, no injuries or fatalities were reported, the home is deemed a total loss.
