HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) — Just over 13% of the population in Humboldt County has gotten at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine. As of yesterday, more than 18,000 Covid-19 vaccines have been administered.

The Public Health Department says the biggest disparity is within the Latinx community with only 6% of that population having gotten a shot. There have also been gaps in less populated areas that may not have as much vaccine.

“We’re going to look at ways to get more outreach to our rural communities across all of Humboldt County, and also in the Latinx community and areas that have been especially hard hit by this pandemic,” according to County Health Officer Dr. Ian Hoffman.

Despite the roll out of vaccines, there has been a downward trend in testing statewide and also here locally. Hoffman emphasizes the importance of testing for Covid-19.

“We’re definitely not out of the woods with this pandemic, and even with this surge. It’s extremely important for us to continue to get tested,” Hoffman says.

Ongoing testing in the community also helps in identifying any variants that may have made their way to the North Coast. None of the variants from the U.K., South Africa, or Brazil have been found in Humboldt County. Hoffman reminds the entire community to remain vigilant and to keep practicing the safety measures recommended by Public Health.

“Going into the next few months is a really fragile time. We do have the potential for another surge to be as big as or bigger than the last surge. We’re going to race to get the vaccine out there as quickly as we can and as broadly as we can to try and mitigate that,” Hoffman adds.
