ARCATA, Calif. (KIEM)- The Arcata Marsh Saturday tours are back and it was a beautiful day to walk around and enjoy the sights and sounds of the wildlife sanctuary.

About 20 people gathered in front of the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center to enjoy a 90-minute walk around the marsh.

These tours are led by different people with knowledge of the marsh but today’s tour was led by Ken Burton, author of many local bird books and of the Humboldt hiking guide.

During the walk, Burton covered things like the importance of the marsh, operations of the treatment plant and about the plants and animals that live there.

“I don’t get paid to do this,” said Burton. “I do it because I enjoy it and I have knowledge to share and it’s nice to be able to share it again.”

For people that have joined these tours before the pause due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was great to be out there again soaking up the sun and some new information.

“It feels great, you know. I’ve missed it so much,” said Nancy Tout, participant of the marsh tour. “My husband and I have gone to lots of walks but it’s nothing like being in a group and getting information from an expert.”

Burton says that it was fun for him to be giving tours at the marsh again, to inform people of what amazing things the city of Arcata has to offer.

“It’s just a way for me to give back to the community and to help people appreciate this place as much as I do.”

Friends of the Arcata Marsh will host one more tour this month which will be held Saturday, May 29 at 2 pm.
