In the span of five weeks, people can learn about the art of rap, techniques for live performances, experience recording music and put everything taught on stage at the end of the five-week hip-hop workshop taught by Dr.oop-Capone.

“I’m teaching them every step of the way about writing, about rapping, about a little bit of hip hop history and culture, and then recording, getting them to the point where they can rap their raps,” Dr.Oop said.

The workshop started on June 27 and is hosted every Tuesday from 3-5 p.m. at the Humboldt Hot Air studio. All ages are welcome to enroll. The workshop fee is $25 per class or $125 for 5 classes. Even though the workshop has already begun Dr.Oop is still allowing people to enroll. Once this first five-week workshop comes to an end the cycle will start again for another five-week course.

“There’s guitar lessons, drum lessons, horn lessons up here but there’s no hip hop lessons,” Dr.Oop said. “So I started doing it in the class, I enjoyed it. I really wanted to take it to the streets. So I started talking to the people at the [Arcata] Playhouse and Humboldt Hot Air about what we needed to do to make it happen. You know, it’s kind of a labor of love.”

Dr.Oop is originally from Los Angeles and has over 20 years of experience in teaching hip-hop and being a rapper himself.  If people are interested in more information about the workshop or future events with Dr.Oop you can email blackloveinfo@gmail.com.
