A barbecue to benefit 4-H participants will be held to support 4-H programs and scholarships for high school seniors.

“We are having our annual 4-H lamb barbecue,” said Kaylin Nylander, the 4-H Program Representative for Humboldt and Del Norte County.  “It was started as a way for the community to give back to 4-H-ers by donating back the livestock that they purchase at the fair. Those scholarships are all for people who are enrolled in Humboldt County 4-H.”

The scholarships are available during the Spring. Only 4-H-ers can apply and receive a scholarship. It’s a four-year scholarship that 4-H-ers can receive meaning future college students can receive the same 4-H scholarship throughout their college education.

“Once you get it, you receive that scholarship for four years and you can start it and regain it if you take a break from college or anything like that,” Nylander said. “They are typically $2,000 apiece, but some are higher and some are lower depending on the amount of applicants.”

The funds are raised through the meals sold at the event. The meat comes from the Humboldt County 4-H-grown livestock. People can expect pork, lamb and goat.

The lamb BBQ and dessert auction is on October 1. Tickets start at $12.
