Redwood Newsmakers: MLK Day Celebration

The theme of this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day event hosted by the Eureka NAACP is It Starts With Me: How to Create, Cultivate and Maintain a beloved community.

“We have a history, right, of doing things in the legacy, and we want to make sure that, that legacy is sustained for generations to come,” said Dr. Kintay Johnson, president of the Eureka NAACP. “Part of that is preparing our younger generation, the youth right to take charge and to step forward. And a lot of these organizations that we have so that we can continue to do things on behalf of our community.”

In addition to several musical performances at this event. There are also several speakers lined up. The event starts at 11 a.m. at the Adorni Center and we’ll go on until 1 p.m.

“We have previous leadership, a very powerful speaking, current leadership,” Johnson said. “President Blanck, President Brown, Miss Charlotte Lawson, will be speaking about the Lawson Scholarship. We also have performances by Mo Desir from Black Humboldt. Andre Stuckey, as well as Zero StarChild will be performing.”

There will also be new speakers speaking. Noel Braggs will be speaking and several other community members. Johnson is sharing the invitation for the community to attend this event. R.W. Hicks is being honored. Dr. Leslie Price knew R.W. personally and he will be speaking about R.W. Hicks.

“In the morning time, there are going to be a march from Cal Poly Humboldt to the Plaza and that’ll go on,” Johnson said. “And then our event starts at 11 at the Adorni Center and we’ll go from 11 to 1. And then at two, there’s also another event in the community center at Arcata that will be put on by several other organizations such as Humboldt County Black Music Arts Association, Black Humboldt,
the NAACP will be there tabling as well.”

Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Day celebration is on Monday, January 15 at the Adorni Center in Eureka.
