Fundraise the Roof: How Spay Humboldt is hoping to replace the damaged roof

After suffering significant damage, Spay Humboldt is asking the community to help fundraise for a new roof.

Spay Humboldt (Humboldt Spay/Neuter Network) has aided in controlling the pet population of Humboldt and providing pet care to Humboldt since 2019.

But, as of late, the roof has become a problem.

“About a year and a half ago, our first leak appeared in our treatment room. Six months after that, the one in our operating room occurred. And then now, most recently, we have a leak in one of our hallways towards the lobby that’s definitely pretty extensive,” Spay Humboldt general manager Trudy Terres said.

These leaks from the flat roof of the building have become more prominent. The roof itself is 15 years old but might have had early signs leading to the leaks.

“A lot of our estimates and professionals who came to look at the roof that it was done – it was installed incorrectly and poorly in the first place which is leading to the rapid decline of the roof which is why we need the entire roof replaced,” Terres said.

Cracks show off the leaks stemming from the roof. One wall in the hallway is also damaged from the water leakage above.

Managing the damage has been a struggle too.

“Definitely, with the rainy season, it’s been tricky. Usually a lot of towels on the floor. Soaking up the water from the roof. Just trying to stay way from those areas and soak up as much of the water as we can when it leaks,” Terres said.

About $50,000 is needed for the replacement, leading to fundraising.

“We started a GoFundMe campaign, help Spay Humboldt get a new roof,” that’s been our main platform for gathering funds. We also have a community member having a bake sale on April 13th and 14th at the Arcata Tractor Supply,” Terres said.

These two efforts have helped spread the word to locals with more than two thousand dollars being raised as of this report.

And Spay Humboldt Could not be more grateful.

“It feels really great. It’s amazing to realize how much support is out there for the community. And how supportive this community is in keeping important resources going,” Terres said.

Thos interested in donating to help with the replacement of the roof can do so at their GoFundMe link.
