Despite the hard closure enforced on Cal Poly Humboldt’s campus, graduation hasn’t been canceled for this year’s seniors.

The University stated that recent challenges on campus have made it impractical to hold the ceremonies as planned, but there will be a series of three off campus ceremonies grouped by majors within the local area.

Local businesses were glad to hear graduation ceremonies were still scheduled.

“We’re doing something with the hotel Arcta for graduation, where we put together these little gift bags that have a little bubble bath, a little bath bomb, and a little graduation rubber duckie, and those are going to be put in all the rooms for people to enjoy. So stuff like that is really cool. Being a part of the community, being involved with other small businesses is really kind of our bread and butter,” says Jonah Ormiston, employee at Bubbles Arcata.

It’s not only businesses in Arcata that are anticipating return traffic for graduation this year.

The Eureka Inn expects near maximum capacity for graduation weekend.

“Yeah, we’re just about there, we usually get pretty full. Graduation has always been one of the busiest times of year”, says Rachel Buck, front desk manager at Eureka Inn.

Multiple graduation locations will provide visitors with ample opportunities for exploring as well.

“The Morris Graves art museum is always really popular as well as the skywalk at the Sequoia Park Zoo. And people love exploring old town as well. We’re just so close to it and it’s such a short walk from this hotel”, she said.
