Arcata City Council to hear ideas for changes to the plaza

ARCATA, CA. – Arcata City Council is making efforts to restore a historic landmark, has plans to adopt a legislative platform, and is listening to suggestions for the plaza.

At their upcoming meeting Wednesday, council will discuss creating incentives for preserving the Smith-McKenzie house of 1877, located on the 1600 block of H Street, as the property could be eligible for tax deductions to allow for restoration.

Also on the agenda, council wants to adopt a Legislative Platform for 2018 – essentially, a summary of locally agreed upon policies, to give the mayor freedom to represent approved interests and respond quickly to state and federal legislation.

Council will also be listening to study session results from groups who’ve gathered opinions surrounding the plaza – on topics such as policing, community safety, cannabis retail, parking, and the controversial McKinley statue.

The Arcata Council meeting starts at 6PM tomorrow in Council Chambers located on 736 F Street.

Another meeting with McKinley plague discussion exclusively agenized is scheduled for February 21st.
