Fallen Eureka firefighters honored at state capital

Fallen California firefighters are being honored at the state capital on Saturday.

The California Firefighters Memorial Ceremony honored 31 firefighters who died in the line of duty, adding their names to over 1,300 inscribed on the brushed limestone wall of the California Firefighters Memorial in Sacramento’s State Park.

Among those 31 were 5 from Eureka who have died between 1934 and 1964. Firefighter Leonard Winslow, Captain George Davis, Engineer Operator Raymond Somma, Lieutenant Adolph Oss, and Engineer Robert Mcgillivray.

The annual ceremony is conducted by the California Fire Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization that represents over 30,000 career firefighters and created by California Professional Firefighters, their mission is to aid fallen firefighters families and the communities they protect.
