Fate of Mckinley Statue left up to voters

Arcata, Ca., (KIEM) Arcata City Council have made their final decision on what is going to happen to the William Mckinley Statue, Wednesday night.

The council had three options to choose from. Options are as follows:

  1. Adopt the ordinance without alteration.
  2. Submit the ordinance to voters of Arcata at the general municipal election to be held on November 6, 2018.
  3. Direct staff to prepare an informational report to be completed by August 10, 2018 and thereafter take action as set out in 1 or 2 above.

The council has decided to go with option two, have the ordinance placed on the November sixth ballot.

And while the pro-statue petition has recieved over 14-hundred valid signatures to be qualified for the November ballot. A Humboldt State University student amongst others were not too pleased.

”The decision made tonight was a rollback on the Arcata City Council’s decision to remove the Mckinley Statue,” the Arcata resident said. “Back on February 21st.”

The next step is the Novemeber election, when the fate of the Mckinley Statue will be determined by voters and not council.
