Shark week started Sunday night, and with some recent shark encounters here in Humboldt, we spoke with an expert to find out what sharks we may see on the North Coast.

Director of the Humboldt State Marine Lab, Brian Tissot, tells us that with around 500 species of sharks, beach goers can have encounters with a variety. He says the sharks we see during the summer are usually harmless, and just trying to feed off of fish.

He tells us that in the past 80 years there have been 15 shark attacks among the beaches of Humboldt County, all with great whites, but we will most likely not see great white sharks until the fall, as they migrate. These creatures of habit will swim to Hawaii and back within the year.

In honor of shark week, we will have more on sharks later this week.
